Garden clubs to host annual plant sale

Published: Friday, May 10, 2013 5:30 a.m. CST

CRYSTAL LAKE – The Tri-Garden Clubs of Crystal Lake will host their annual plant sale May 18 from 9 a.m. until the plants are gone at the Dole Mansion, 401 Country Club Road.

This annual event is hosted by the Countryside, Garden Gate and Green Twig garden clubs.

The plants are from club members’ own gardens and include perennials, herbs, vegetables, native plants, ground cover and shrubs/trees, etc.

Each plant will have an identification stick with pertinent information for that plant, i.e. plant name, botanical name, height, color of flower, sun/shade and any other special planting directions.

Members will be on hand to assist with selections and answer gardening questions.

The three clubs jointly use the proceeds from the sale to sponsor scholarships at McHenry County College for students interested in horticulture, Arbor Day festivities, a garden-related program for the public and civic beautification efforts.

This Garden Club plant sale was started in the 1960s to offset expenses incurred for an annual “standard” flower.

At that time, plants were sold for 50 cents each.
