FVC tennis tourney begins

Crystal Lake Central’s Kushal Gourikrishna and T.J. Blackmore won their opening round match of the Fox Valley Conference Tournament at No. 2 doubles, knocking off No. 4 seed Scott Wonsil and Spencer Freeman from Grayslake North, 6-4, 6-3.

A few matches were played indoors Thursday, at Huntley Health Bridge and the Racket Club in Algonquin, to accommodate those players taking AP tests on Friday.

Also advancing were McHenry’s Nick Fanlon at No. 2 singles, Huntley’s Max Pilkerton and Garrick McDaniel at No. 1 doubles, Brad Phoenix and Jake Sigmund at No. 3 doubles and Grayslake Central’s Miguel Tolentino at No. 1 singles.


Huntley 12, Cary-Grove 0 (5 inn.): Tommy Kiriakopolus tripled and scored three runs in a Fox Valley Conference Valley Division win for the Red Raiders (21-3, 13-3 FVC Valley). Dean Lee went 1 of 2 for the Trojans.

CL Central 7, Grayslake North 6: At Grayslake, Colin Telmanik had a two-run home run for the Tigers (13-9, 7-8), with Parker Harold going 2 for 3 with an RBI and picking up the win in relief in their FVC Fox win.


Big Northern Conference Meet: At Oregon, Richmond-Burton took ninth with 26 points, Harvard took 10th with 23 points and Marengo took 11th with 21 points. 

James Kaht won the 1,600 meters in 4:37.67 for the Rockets, and added a second-place finish in the 3,200 in 9:57.76.

Jorge Pichardo won the 3,200 meters in 9:52.66 for the Hornets, with Zach Martin adding a second-place finish in the triple jump at 41 feet, 9 3/4 inches. Nick Simons placed second at the 110 high hurdles in 15.81 seconds for the Indians.

Burlington Central won the meet with 95 points.


Libertyville 2, Jacobs 1: At Libertyville, Danielle Blanchard scored a second-half goal for the Golden Eagles (6-9-1) in a nonconference loss.

Woodstock North 5, Round Lake 0: At Woodstock, Nicolette Kruczek scored two goals for the Thunder (4-12) in a nonconference win.

CL Central 3, Woodstock 0: At Woodstock, Katie Beck scored two goals, both on Stacie Wolgram assists, and added an assist for the Tigers (6-5-1, 4-1) in their FVC Fox win.

Marissa Krueger made seven saves in goal for the Blue Streaks (4-13, 2-4).

McHenry 3, Dundee-Crown 0: At Carpentersville, Amber Pringle scored a goal and added an assist for the Warriors (6-9-1, 2-4) in their FVC Valley win.

Isabel Miranda made six saves in goal for the Chargers (4-13, 1-4).


Mundelein Sectional: Garrett Floden scored two goals for McHenry in a 16-4 quarterfinal loss to No. 1 seed Stevenson. Also scoring for the Warriors were Andrew Trocki and Matt Peck.


CL South 8, Jacobs 2: At Crystal Lake, Kimmy Woods went 2 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI for the Gators (12-9, 4-8), with Sam McLean adding an RBI double in their FVC Valley win.

Payton Spirling had a double and run scored for the Golden Eagles (12-11, 4-5).
