U of I considers limits on search firms

URBANA (AP) — The University of Illinois is getting ready to rely less on search firms for hiring than it has in the past.

The News-Gazette in Champaign reports (http://bit.ly/15Tqvwl ) university trustees this week were given a draft of the new policy. The policy would restrict the university from hiring those firms unless it was looking for a new president or other very-senior position, a sports coach or a few other instances.

The policy is a response to legislation signed into law by Gov. Pat Quinn calling for such restrictions at public universities in the state.

The university in the past has spent several hundred thousand dollars a year on search firms for any number of positions. In some cases those searches ended when candidates already working at the university were hired.
