Hawks to meet Wings

Detroit Red Wings, come on down.

The Blackhawks learned late Sunday that they would face one of their oldest rivals in the Western Conference semifinals. The No. 7 seed Red Wings defeated the No. 2 seed Anaheim Ducks, 3-2, in Game 7 of the conference quarterfinals to advance to a second-round matchup against the Hawks.

Any playoff series between the Hawks and Wings is special, but this one has added meaning because it will mark the last time that both teams meet as members of the Western Conference. After the playoffs, the Wings will join the Eastern Conference as part of the league’s realignment plan.

The Hawks dominated the Wings during the regular season, winning all four meetings between the teams. The Hawks will host Games 1 and 2 this week at the United Center before heading to Detroit for Games 3 and 4, but the NHL has yet to release its second-round schedule.
