To the Editor:
I am gravely concerned about the McHenry County Mental Health Board’s lack of oversight and accountability that this agency has to the McHenry County Board, the taxpayers who fund it and the residents who desperately need the services it was funded to ensure.
On May 7, I gave public comment at the County Board meeting to express my concerns. I also expressed support for the nominee presented to the County Board for approval. He is an attorney and MBA with a long experience in public health management. In short, he was a superior candidate for that volunteer board. It seemed like a no-brainer.
What occurred was just the opposite. Rather than the timely approval of a highly qualified candidate that had been selected and vetted by the Public Health and Human Services Committee, the County Board voted the candidate down with no questions asked nor any consideration of the concerns expressed by a number of individuals who spoke.
Clearly the decision was made before the meeting occurred. To add insult to injury, the board chair, Tina Hill, then invoked her right to present her own candidate.
I consider the actions of the County Board and the chair to have been a slap in the face to the citizens of this county who deserve better. I urge the elected officials to reconsider their actions and support the efforts of the Public Health and Human Services Committee.
