Kudos to Centegra

To the Editor:

Centegra Health System is to be commended for adopting Ban the Bags, which eliminates the practice of giving free infant formula to mothers as they leave the hospital with their newborn babies.

With more than three-fourths of mothers initiating breast-feeding at birth, a “gift” of formula is counterproductive. Mother and baby are just beginning to latch on and catch on to nature’s unique and highly beneficial system for feeding the baby. Blips along the way can most often be resolved by contacting an experienced, knowledgeable breast-feeding advocate.

Such support can be found with La Leche League International, one of the largest and oldest, if not the oldest, breast-feeding support organizations, with over 50 years experience helping mothers. A mother can call LLLI in Schaumburg at 847-519-7730 to learn more about breast-feeding or to locate a volunteer La Leche League leader in her area.

The rewards are life-giving and lifelong.
