Peeved about pensions

Published: Friday, May 17, 2013 5:30 a.m. CDT

To the Editor:

I have been told by multiple media sources that the state of Illinois is around $95 billion in debt to teachers’ and other pensions.

Well, I just got my 2012 real estate tax bill, and there are six pensions listed on it – McHenry County, McHenry County College, School District 15, School District 156, Nunda Township and McHenry city.

Can someone please explain to me why I have these pensions on my tax bill if the state of Illinois is supposed to be paying them? Whatever happened to the days when workers saved for their retirement instead of expecting someone else to pay for it?

The Northwest Herald has been reporting that some taxing districts in the county have settled for a flat levy, but every section of my tax bill is higher than last year.
