Fiftyshadesofhay wins Black-Eyed Susan

BALTIMORE – Fiftyshadesofhay made a late move to overtake Marathon Lady and win the $500,000 Black-Eyed Susan on Friday at Pimlico Race Course.

The race, held annually before the Preakness since 1919, is for 3-year-old fillies.

Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert saddled Fiftyshadesofhay, and Joel Rosario, who won the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago, deftly rode the horse to his first win in three tries since Jan. 26.

Fiftyshadesofhay trailed with 200 yards left before breaking outside. She was in second with 100 yards to go, but outran Marathon Lady the rest of the way.

The winning time for the 1 1/8-mile race was 1:52.73.

Marathon Lady finished second, and Toasting was third. Emollient, the favorite, was out of the money.

The winner paid $5.60, $3.80 and $3.
