Marriage arrogance

To the Editor:

In his May 7 letter to the editor, Bud March asked why same gender couples needed to be married instead of having a civil union.

It could very well be because there is a perceived difference, if not a real one.

A better question might be, “What difference does it make to the straight community if gays and lesbians want to marry?” No one is forcing any church to perform the service, though one wonders why they wouldn’t. Aren’t we all God’s children? Is marriage about gender or love? Opposite gender marriage is only a tradition because of the tyranny of the majority. Well, this country is all about minority rights.

Mr. March’s last comment about the “cafeteria approach to making moral decisions,” by which he meant people pick and choose what fits their desires rather than what is morally right and good. Morally right and good by whose definition?

Someone I respect once told me on the subject of homosexuality, “Hate the sin. Love the sinner.” If arrogance is a sin, then I might say the same because to assume you have the answers for anyone but yourself is certainly arrogant.
