Cubs' Garza scheduled to make season debut Tuesday

CHICAGO – Right-hander Matt Garza will finally make his first start of the season Tuesday at Pittsburgh.

Manager Dale Sveum and the Cubs determined Garza is ready following his rehab start Thursday for Triple-A Iowa. Garza's return bumps Carlos Villanueva to the bullpen. Sveum said Villanueva can be used in a variety of roles and his versatility will be an asset to what has been a shaky bullpen at times. Garza will likely be limited to throwing 85-90 pitches in his start Tuesday.

A corresponding move to create a roster spot for Garza will not be made until Tuesday, but it is expected the Cubs will demote a reliever with the addition of Villanueva to the bullpen.

"[Garza] threw fine and he did everything," Sveum said. "He felt great coming off going out there six different times and he did everything."

Right-hander Scott Feldman (3-3, 2.53 ERA) starts today for the Cubs against the Mets, which counter with right-hander Jeremy Hefner (0-4, 4.61). Feldman has been dominant in his last four starts, posting a 3-0 record and 1.57 ERA. During that stretch, opponents have hit .170 against him. However, Feldman has surrendered seven unearned runs, tied for third most in the majors. Washington's Stephen Strasburg leads the majors with nine unearned runs.

In 25 quality starts this season, Cubs pitchers have recorded a 2.00 ERA, though they have won only 10 of those games. In comparison, the Cardinals have won 18 of their 28 quality starts.
