5 victims of Ill. van crash were from Baltimore

VANDALIA  — Authorities say the five men killed when their van veered off a southern Illinois freeway were from Baltimore.

Fayette County Coroner Bruce Bowen has identified the dead as 54-year-old Emerson Baldwin, 53-year-old Andrew Canada, 42-year-old Antonie Mitchell, 52-year-old Mark William and 29-year-old Thomas Coleman. The six others in the 15-passenger van were injured.

Authorities have said the men had attended a California religious event and were eastbound on Interstate 70 on Monday near Vandalia when the van left the road and repeatedly overturned. Nine of the occupants were ejected.

The driver, who survived, was ticketed for improper lane usage and driving with a suspended license.

Illinois State Police spokeswoman Monique Bond says the investigation will include a toxicology test.

Vandalia is about 70 miles east of St. Louis.
