Honorary street signs must go before committee first

McHENRY – The application to name an intersection after District 156’s retiring superintendent was pulled from Monday’s agenda, the city administrator said.

Another application for the same intersection was already in line, City Administrator Derik Morefield said, so the application for Superintendent Gina Swinney shouldn’t have been on the agenda.

Morefield declined to say who the other application was for, but said city staff had wanted a chance to talk to the family about the application.

Because city officials expect the program to grow, future applications will go through the Public Works Committee before coming to the full City Council.

All 13 of the applications submitted since the program was created in 2005 have been accepted.

It is up to the applicant, Swinney’s daughter, Sarah, to reapply with a different location.

The original application had asked that the intersection of Main and Green streets, across the street from McHenry East High School and adjacent to the District 15 administrative building, be designated “Honorary Dr. Gina Swinney Way.”

Swinney is retiring, effective the end of June, from a 35-year career with McHenry’s school districts.

She has worked at both high schools, was an assistant principal at Valley View Elementary School and Parkland Middle School, and held administrative positions at both Districts 156 and 15.

She took over as District 156’s superintendent in the winter of 2011.
