Opening statements expected in ex-alderman trial

CHICAGO — A lawyer for a former Chicago alderman who was convicted in one of the city's most famous corruption cases is set to deliver opening statements in a new bribery case.

Ambrosio Medrano and two businessmen were charged last year with felony charges for conspiring to commit bribery after authorities say they agreed to pay off an undercover FBI agent who was posing as a purchasing agent for an out-of-state hospital.

Prosecutors delivered their opening statements Monday after jury selection. Opening statements from Medrano's lawyer are expected Tuesday.

Medrano spent nearly two years in prison after pleading guilty in 1996 to charges from an investigation into payoffs of aldermen and other Chicago-area politicians.
