Though the weather may not seem like it, summer is upon us. School is out, kids are home and yes, the adults must still work. Not to worry, with summer there is always plenty of opportunity to bring your business outdoors and enjoy the summer while meeting the residents and visitors in and around your community. Be sure to call your local chamber to learn more about the many festivals and outdoor events which may need volunteers, sponsors or exhibitors, all of which will help to connect you to the community.
Starting Tuesday, the Algonquin/Lake in the Hills chamber will host our monthly Cruise Night which takes place from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the parking area in front of Sonic Drive-In, 1090 S. Randall Road, Algonquin. This fun, family event includes music and cars, along with business members offering kid-friendly activities while displaying their services and products. This year, each month will have a different theme while supporting a local organization; June 11, Beachtime for the Food Pantry; July 9, Military Veterans Network; and Aug. 6, Back to School Supporting Families in Need. Visitors and car owners donating an item will receive a “tasty treat” coupon from Sonic Drive-In.

The chamber once again is coordinating the volunteers for Founders Days Festival (algonquinfoundersday.com), which will be held July 25-28 at Presidential Park. Businesses and families are encouraged to call the chamber at 847-658-5300 and schedule their two-hour volunteer shift. For businesses and their staffs, volunteering is a great opportunity to wear your logoed apparel and have fun with the residents and visitors attending the festival. Areas where volunteers are needed include gates, information booth along with extra help during the run and parade.
Additional festivals where families and businesses are welcome to volunteer include Rotary Ribfest July 12-14 (www.rockinrotaryribfest.com), and the Lake in the Hills Summer Sunset Fest Aug. 29-Sept. 1 (www.summersunsetfest.com). All three festivals are organized by various groups of individuals. However, they all take hundreds of volunteers to run smoothly. Visit the appropriate website to learn more about how you, your business, family and friends can enjoy a few hours volunteering.
For businesses who take advantage of the many summer activities, this is a great time for your customers and clients to see you supporting their community. Wear something with your business name included, be sure you have a few business cards in your wallet, and remember to have fun!

While businesses continue to scratch their heads and wonder about what the latest is on the Affordable Care Act, the Algonquin/Lake in the Hills chamber will host a two workshops in an effort to help area businesses gain a better understanding of the impact on their businesses, their staffs and their families.
From 7:30 to 9 a.m. Tuesday, “Helping Businesses Understand and Prepare for the ACA” will provide guests with the basics of the ACA, how to calculate to determine the ACA’s impact, and an overview on options for sole proprietors and individuals. Regardless of the direct impact to a business, employers need to be prepared to address questions from staff and even clients.
The second workshop, “All The Rules Apply, Now What,” will be from 7:30 to 9 a.m. June 20. The workshop will address calculation requirements, coverage requirements, penalty and exchange information and how to plan and prepare for 2014.
Both workshops will be held in the chamber office, 2114 W. Algonquin Road, Lake in the Hills, and will be presented by Denise Benages, owner of HR Midwest, and Jim Patrician of Coordinated Benefits.
