McDonald's sales up 2.6 percent in May

NEW YORK – McDonald's says a key sales figure rose 2.6 percent in May, with the world's biggest hamburger chain attributing the bump to its focus on value and new menu options.

The Oak Brook-based company noted that the increase in global sales at restaurants open at least 13 months came despite ongoing economic uncertainty.

In the U.S., the figure rose 2.4 percent. It rose 2 percent in Europe and edged up 0.9 percent in the region encompassing Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

The company noted that it benefited from an extra Friday for the month.

After years of outperforming rivals, McDonald's Corp. had been struggling to boost sales as it faces changing eating habits and weak growth in the restaurant industry.
