Harvard selects Jeremy Adams to fill empty council seat

HARVARD – The city has chosen a 36-year-old Harvard businessman to fill its vacant council seat.

Jeremy Adams has taken over as 4th Ward alderman, taking the spot of Darrell Perkins, who left the council in February to take a city job in the Public Works Department.

Mayor Jay Nolan said he received three letters of interest and distributed them to the council for its consideration.

“I asked them, and they came back with Jeremy as their pick,” he said. “I think he’s a good man for the job. The council felt the same way.”

Adams is a graduate of Harvard High School who now runs Harvard-based Hometown Landscaping with his father.

He has a 7-year-old daughter and a 9-month-old son.

“I’d like to work ... more with Parks and Recreation and try to bring more things for the kids to do,” Adams said.

He added his age will allow him a different perspective than others on the council.

“A lot of my friends have kids, so maybe I can relate to a lot of the families in my age group,” he said.

Nolan echoed that hope.

“He’s a young man, young family man,” he said. “Hopefully he’ll bring that perspective.”

Perkins submitted his letter of resignation Feb. 8 and started his job with public works shortly thereafter.

The city never advertised, gathered applications or conducted formal interviews for that position, although Nolan said later that he “had feelers out.”

Adams will take over Perkins’ term, which will expire in April 2015.
