Metra resumes service as storm dies down

Update 8:51 p.m.: The National Weather Service extended the tornado watch for McHenry County and 10 other Illinois counties to 11 p.m.

The watch was previously set to end at 9 p.m.

Update 8:39 p.m.: After delays topping 90 minutes, Metra trains are pulling into McHenry County.

All commuter train service in and out of Chicago was stopped Wednesday afternoon as severe storms moved into the area.

McHenry County remains with a tornado watch, according to the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service upgraded the risk of storms to its highest alert level for parts of Illinois, including McHenry County.

The severe thuderstorm warning in western McHenry County has been canceled, according to the National Weather Service. The area remains under a tornado watch until 9 p.m.

Some events are being canceled in light of the weather, including the McHenry County Historical Society's Perkins Players performance and gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner's speaking engagement at the Nunda Township Republican Committee meeting.

Thunderstorms will produce heavy rainfall, with widespread rainfall of between 1 and 3 inches likely north of a line from Dixon to Gary, Ind., according to the National Weather Service in Chicago.

National Weather Service authorities reported several small tornados, quarter-sized hail and winds of up to 60 mph as severe weather moved across northern Illinois. Meanwhile, airlines canceled more than 120 flights at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport. And Wednesday night's White Sox game was postponed.
