McHENRY – A McHenry comic book store was being held up by metal supports on Wednesday night after a van crashed into it, a witness said.
Crews were dispatched to Al n' Ann's Collectibles, 3819 W. Main St., at around 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday for a report of a motor vehicle accident, according to the McHenry Township Fire Protection District. Emergency personnel and police arrived to find that a vehicle a drove into the front of the building.
A van first T-boned an SUV pulling a boat on Main Street near Front Street about 2 p.m., said Alex Rich, 24, of McHenry, who had just turned on to Main Street when the accident happened. The van then swerved around the SUV, driving straight into the business.
Crews used emergency stabilization struts to stabilize the building and then entered and removed the driver of the behicle and two residents in the building, according to a news release. The second floor of the building was also evacuated for safety reasons.
The driver of the vehicle was taken to Centegra Hospital - McHenry with inuries that were not considered life threatening. One person inside the building was treated and released at the scene.
McHenry police did not return calls seeking details.
The front end of the building was destroyed.
“I heard the crash of the building,” Rich said. “I can’t even believe it. I’ve never seen anything like that before, something strange.”
The investigation is ongoing.
