A Crystal Lake man who was wanted on warrants for theft charges in McHenry and Crystal Lake, and bank robbery charges in Chicago, was taken into custody Thursday by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.

John L. Gilbert, 35, allegedly stole leaf blowers May 21 from the Greener Lawns Co., according to the McHenry Police Department.

Four days later, the police department said Gilbert stole a $1,500 bicycle from the Bike Haven store.

A 1998 Ford Taurus also was stolen in the May 21 incident, McHenry police said. McHenry police also said that on Wednesday, more lawn care equipment and a 1999 Chevrolet van were taken from Greener Lawns Co.

On Tuesday, the Crystal Lake Police Department obtained a warrant for Gilbert in connection with a theft of another high-end bicycle.

The FBI also had a warrant for Gilbert for allegedly robbing banks in Chicago.

The McHenry and Crystal Lake police departments were unable to find and arrest Gilbert, which led to him being put on the county’s 10 most wanted list.

Gilbert was located Wednesday, and on Thursday, the sheriff’s office and U.S. Marshal’s Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force took him into custody after a traffic stop in McHenry.

During the traffic stop, other items were located and seized, the sheriff’s office said. Other burglary charges against Gilbert are pending.

He later was taken to the FBI office in Chicago.
