Lake in the Hills Village Board updates parks plan

LAKE IN THE HILLS – A splash pad expansion at Sunset Park stayed in the village’s parks master plan update.

Changes to the plan were approved this week.

Under the update, recommended by the Parks and Recreation Board, the Village Board will keep a plan to expand the splash pad at Sunset Park.

The Village Board previously sent the plan back to parks commissioners because there was concern about whether there should be an aquatic feature on the east side of the village.

Parks and Recreation Director Trudy Wakeman said there is money in the budget for a splash pad expansion and there already is an audience for the water feature at Sunset Park.

“The expansion of the Sunset Park splash pad would be the best recommendation for the use of the 2013 funds,” Wakeman wrote in a memo to the Village Board. “The [Parks and Recreation] board feels if the expansion is to be done correctly, that funds from the FY 13 would start the project and additional FY 14 funds would be necessary to complete the project.”

Wakeman added a survey is planned for 2014 to determine whether there is a need and a demand for an aquatic feature on the east side of the village.

The last time the parks master plan was updated was two years ago, Wakeman said.

Among the changes in the plan is removing an upgrade to the Larsen Park fireplace.

Other suggestions in the master plan update are shore stabilization work at Barbara Key Park, Echo Hill Park, Turtle Island, Indian Trail Beach and Larsen Park.

A parking lot improvement at Linda K. Fischer Park, recoating the basketball court at Barbara Key Park and repairing the tennis courts at Leroy Guy Park also were part of the park master plan update.

Wakeman also wrote in her memo that village officials will research and consider the most feasible uses of two open lots at Linden and Crystal Lake Road and Wander Way.
