MURPH'S 'MOTE: Expect OT for Blackhawks

Northwest Herald sports copy editor Kevin Murphy picks his top sporting events to watch this weekend:

Pro hockey: NHL playoffs, Stanley Cup Final, Game 5, Boston at Blackhawks, 7 p.m. Saturday, NBC

Here’s my advice. Don’t bother watching until the third period. Maybe. This game is likely going to overtime. Why would I say that? Well, just look at Games 1, 2 and 4. Have some aspirin nearby and start praying as another Hawks game heads to overtime.

My recommendation is to make picks among your friends for the overtime winner. Brent Seabrook is a trendy pick. You can also play the ESPN’s John Buccigross overtime challenge by tweeting the winner with #bucciovertimechallenge and, hopefully, win a T-shirt.

Soccer: Confederations Cup, Group B, Nigeria vs. Spain, at Fortaleza, Brazil, 1:30 p.m. Sunday, ESPN

Spain put up 10 goals on Tahiti on Thursday. That’s right, 10 goals. What’s even crazier is that the Tahiti coach expected La Roja to score even more. Like 20. Seriously.

Spain even tried scoring by bicycle kicks. That player promptly got booed, when Spain was up, 4-0.

If you complain about low scoring matches, maybe you’ll actually tune into this. There should be plenty of scoring.

Football: Arena League, Iowa at Philadelphia, 6 p.m. Saturday, CSN

I’m not really liking either Cubs-Houston or White Sox-Kansas City games as an option to watch. Why not go with football? Yes, it might be Arena League, but it’s better than an afternoon of average baseball.

Track and field, U.S. Outdoor Championships, at Des Moines, Iowa, 3 p.m., Sunday, NBC

Jacobs graduate Evan Jager of Algonquin is the favorite coming into the meet in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. He holds the American record (8:06.81) and is the defending U.S. champion after taking the win at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials and going on to make the Olympic final.

Jager is starting to emerge as a national presence. He’s on the cover of the July issue of Running Times, and his training with other athletes in Portland, Ore., is pushing him to challenge world records. In the issue, it is noted that Jager could contend for a medal at the world championships in Moscow in August. Hopefully, he starts off on the right foot this weekend.
