Burmeister takes over as McHenry's AD

Barry Burmeister coveted the job as McHenry’s athletic director last year. Now, he has it.

Burmeister, a long-time teacher and coach at the high school, was hired at District 156’s June 3 school board meeting. Burmeister worked as the Warriors’ assistant athletic director with AD Scott Smith this year.

Burmeister has been at McHenry for 25 years and coached boys basketball and softball. Mike Roberts, who worked as principal this year before taking over as superintendent, is excited about having Burmeister as the AD.

“Barry is extremely organized. He is extremely personable,” Roberts said. “He’s respected by coaches in the Fox Valley, as well as all of the athletic directors. And he bleeds orange and black. He loves our system, he loves our kids, and he’s just the right guy.”

Burmeister was one of the top candidates for the position last year before Smith, a former football coach from Niles North, was hired.

“Sometimes selection committees are a little different,” Roberts said. “The selection committee [this time] was not identical.”

Roberts did not elaborate on why Smith was not rehired.

“It just didn’t work out,” Roberts said. “I want to focus on Barry and moving forward. Barry is the right man for this job.”

Burmeister is vacationing in Las Vegas and was not able to be reached for comment. A voicemail was left with Smith Monday night, but he did not return a call.
