CRYSTAL LAKE – McHenry County College received a $50,000 Institute of Museum and Library Services Laura Bush 21st Century Librarians Program collaborative planning grant.

Out of 21 proposals awarded for 2013, MCC is the only community college in the nation and the only institution in Illinois to receive the award.

This grant will allow the MCC to proceed with “Information Literacy for College Readiness,” an MCC project that focuses on the development of a plan, in partnership with local schools, to increase the information literacy of high school students through librarian professional development.

“Through the research and partnerships formed with the high school libraries, students will benefit from the knowledge gained." Marcella Reca Zipp, director of resource development at MCC, said in a news release.

Because of the Internet and Digital Age, teaching high school students how to evaluate information sources is more important than ever, area high school librarians said.

“One of the most important aspects of information literacy is evaluating the quality of sources and to know the difference between reliable information and bias and advertising,” Amy Bland, teacher-librarian at Prairie Ridge High School, said in a news release.

The grant will continue until April 2014. As part of the project, MCC will hire Northern Illinois University to conduct a needs assessment, review the results, disseminate the results to target high schools, and discuss recommendations. MCC librarians also will conduct a literature review for the program implementation and research professional development training programs on information literacy.

The college then will use the information collected to apply for a larger 21st century grant to create professional development activities for high school librarians and MCC librarians for information literacy.
