Police: Disabled Pa. man who died suffered neglect

SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) — Authorities say that family members charged with murder and neglect in the death of a 32-year-old Pennsylvania man with Down syndrome worried about losing the man's government assistance if he was placed in a personal care facility.

Police say in court documents that Robert Gensiak's body was covered with sores and he weighed just 69 pounds when he died at a hospital in March.

Fifty-nine-year-old Susan Gensiak, of Taylor in northeastern Pennsylvania, and her daughters, 35-year-old Joan and 24-year-old Rebekah, were charged Wednesday with third-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter and neglect of care for a dependent person. Court records don't list attorneys for the women.

Records show Robert Gensiak hadn't received medical attention since 2009. The district attorney says it's the worst case of neglect he's seen.
