Five local softball players received All-State second-team honors from the Illinois Coaches Association, which announced its state teams Friday.
Cary-Grove’s Lindsay Efflandt and Sarah Leudo and Huntley’s Miranda Peterson were named to the Class 4A All-State second team. Marengo’s Bethany Hart and Abby Kissack were picked to the Class 3A second team.
Marengo’s Veronica Ruelius and Taylor Carlson were named to the Class 3A third team. Six of those seven players were named to the Northwest Herald All-Area first team this month; Carlson was selected to the second team.
Efflandt was 10-2 with an 0.87 ERA and also was a dangerous hitter for the Trojans. She was on pace to challenge the state’s career record for victories (102) when she was struck in the face by a line drive off the bat of Prairie Ridge’s Kirsten Stevens midway through the season. Efflandt returned for a couple of games at the end of the season.
Leudo set C-G’s school record with 13 home runs this season and batted .356 while playing catcher.
Peterson drove in 37 runs for Huntley and played shortstop. She also had 11 doubles and three homers.
Hart was Marengo’s ace with a 17-8 record and a 1.69 ERA and struck out 175 batters in 1741/3 innings. Kissack hit .395 and played multiple positions for the Indians. She drove in 21 runs and also was their No. 2 pitcher.
Ruelius, a sophomore, had six triples, three homers and 37 RBIs while hitting .432.
