OAK BROOK (AP) — Authorities say they are searching for two men who took part in a brazen attempted robbery of a jewelry store with a man who smashed a display case with a sledge hammer before a security guard shot him.

On Monday, Oak Brook Police say the Jeep that the two men drove away from Oakbrook Center mall after Sunday's attempted robbery of a C.D. Peacock was recovered in nearby Oak Brook Terrace. They believe the men stole the Jeep earlier in the day from the mall.

Police say the suspect who was shot in the abdomen remains in critical but stable condition at an area hospital. Because he has not been charged, police would only say he is a 24-year-old Chicago resident.
