Marengo alum to play ball in Australia

Sara Wiedmaier’s college eligibility has expired, but the 2009 Marengo graduate will have a couple more weeks to play competitive softball this summer.

Wiedmaier, who will be a senior at NCAA Division II Minnesota-Crookston, was chosen to play with USA Athletes International for a team that will compete in Australia. The team is scheduled to leave July 21 and return Aug. 2.

“This is my last chance to play,” said Wiedmaier, who led the Golden Eagles with 12 RBIs this season. “I’m very excited. It took me a while because of expenses to do the fundraising. Friends and family helped me out with that by buying raffle tickets.”

A big part of Wiedmaier’s fundraising was raffle tickets for a trip for two to Barbados next summer.

Wiedmaier hit .234 with two home runs for the Eagles (3-38). Crookston pitcher Stacey Marcum also will play for the team.

Wiedmaier and Marcum learned last fall they had been picked for the team.

Marengo coach Dwain Nance said Wiedmaier was a late bloomer in her sport. She was in the Indians’ lineup as designated player and first baseman in her senior season, then improved her game at McHenry County College before moving on to Crookston.

“She’s s great kid with a great attitude,” Nance said. “She wasn’t a standout player, but she gave her all every day. She developed at MCC, and it was cool to see her go on and play D-II.”

Nance said he thinks Wiedmaier, who played multiple sports at Marengo, benefited from concentrating on softball in college.

Wiedmaier will return to Crookston for another year to take classes and will intern in the athletic department. She is majoring in sports management and then hopes to attend graduate school somewhere and be a graduate assistant softball coach.
