CHARLESTON – An eastern Illinois man and his dog survived what could have been a deadly ride over a lake spillway.

Charleston Fire Chief Pat Goodwin told the Mattoon Journal-Gazette that Shane Cassady and his German shepherd, Koda, were fortunate to survive the Wednesday accident. Charleston is about 50 miles south of Champaign.

Cassady said his boat’s motor died and the boat drifted toward the Lake Charleston spillway. Cassady jumped out and tried to take Koda but his collar slipped off.

Cassady then tried to swim to shore but the current caught him. He, the boat and dog were swept over.

Goodwin said both Cassady and the dog survived the churning water at the bottom.

A memorial to others who have died at the spot sits nearby.
