Woodstock police add to presence on Square

Woodstock police make proactive move against disturbances

WOODSTOCK – Police are beefing up enforcement on the Square in downtown Woodstock in hopes of deterring the disturbances that come with the warm weather.

Each year, the summer season brings with it a bump in police activity on the Square, from public intoxication to disorderly conduct. The Woodstock Police Department is trying to get in front of the issue by boosting its presence.

“The Square is the gem of the city. They pride themselves on the Square,” Sgt. Chip Amati said. “But we have to make sure it’s a safe, happy place for people to show up.”

Police have made arrests recently for public consumption of alcohol, disorderly conduct, underage possession of tobacco and blocking public sidewalks, according to a news release from the Woodstock Police Department.

Enforcement efforts are focused on “disruptive behavior that takes away from the public’s enjoyment of the Park in the Square and the downtown business district,” the news release said.

Amati said the extra enforcement would help ensure that those on the Square aren’t harassed by transients, the kids who make the park their hangout or intoxicated people from any of the surrounding bars. He noted the added importance of extra enforcement during downtown events, such as the Woodstock Farmers Market.

He said the police department has taken similar measures in the past.

“We usually do that anyway in the summer,” Amati said. “We just like to let everyone know that we are out there.”

Woodstock police are urging anyone who sees an issue to report it to the department at 815-338-2131.
