Island Lake rehires another police officer
ISLAND LAKE – Village Board members on Thursday reinstated police officer Billy Dickerson, their second addition this month of an officer gone from the staff since 2010.
The board voted 4-3 to rehire Dickerson after he was "dismissed improperly" three years ago, Island Lake Mayor Charles Amrich said. Amrich provided the tie-breaking vote.
The board rehired Wayne Schnell earlier this month.
"There's a lot of things that were hanging out there that weren't proper," Amrich said. "We're just trying to right some wrongs. That's all we're doing."
Both Dickerson and Schnell have a political tie to Amrich. Schnell managed the campaign of the For the People slate, under which Amrich ran this spring when he defeated incumbent Debbie Herrmann.
Dickerson also campaigned for Amrich.
Amrich said he wasn't concerned with how either move looks to the residents of the village, which is split between McHenry and Lake counties.
Reached by phone Saturday, he wasn't able to provide Dickerson's salary.
"I'm sure it's comparable to what he was making when he left," Amrich said.
The board had a vote to reinstate Dickerson on the agenda June 13, the night Schnell was rehired. But officials delayed the decision to "get some clarification from the union, and make sure we had everything right," Amrich said.
Both police officers left the staff under Herrmann and then-police chief William McCorkle, who resigned the day Amrich took office. McCorkle was replaced by Police Chief Don Bero.
