NEWBURG, Ind. – Joe Affrunti ended Sunday where he hoped to when the day began – atop the leaderboard of the United Leasing Championship.
The only thing is, so did three other players all pushing for a win in the weekend’s Web.com Tour event at Victoria National Golf Club.
Affrunti shot a 2-under-par 70 on Sunday to finish the fourth round of the event in a four-way tie for first place at 11-under and will compete in a playoff Monday morning.
The Crystal Lake native battled Billy Hurley III throughout the day Sunday, when Affrunit had seven birdies in his round for the second straight day. The event, which was suspended earlier Sunday because of inclement weather, appeared to be a two-man event until late in the final round.
Affrunti, who finished Saturday’s round with back-to-back bogeys, posted a double-bogey on the 17th hole to drop to 11-under for the tournament, opening the top of the leaderboard back up.
On Monday, Affrunti and Hurley, along with Ashley Hall and Ben Martin, will begin the playoff. Hall shot a 6-under 66 to remain in contention, and Hall was just a shot off that pace with a 5-under 67. Affrunti finished the day with a 70 and Hurley, who started the day with a two-shot lead, finished with a 72.
Affrunti did not respond to a a text message Sunday night, but said in a phone interview Saturday that he feels good where his game is at heading into three straight PGA Tour events, the first of which begins this week in West Virginia.
“I know [my game] is there and it’s just a matter of being patient,” Affrunti said Saturday night. “This is a game where if you try to push it, you’re only pushing the envelope and something bad could happen. So if you stay patient, good things happen – you’ll make birdies and good results will happen.”
