Ministry committee hosts raffle to benefit immigrant detainees

CRYSTAL LAKE – The Interfaith Committee for Detained Immigrants will hold a raffle to benefit the organization’s ministry work in the McHenry County Jail and the Post-Detention Accompaniment Program.

Along with providing ministry services to jail detainees, the organization provides support for released detainees in need of temporary housing, food, clothing and travel expense assistance.

Raffle tickets are $5 each or six tickets for $25. Tickets will be sold at local churches and at the Raue Center for the Arts during a showing of “Band of Sisters” on July 12. The documentary features nuns JoAnn Persch and Pat Murphy, who started the ministry program at McHenry County Jail.

The first prize is two nights and three days in an Aqua Building condo in downtown Chicago, which includes 72-hour parking, two passes to The Art Institute, seating for two at a Millennium Park summer concert and a $100 gift certificate for Sopraffina or Trattoria 10 restaurants.

Other prizes include a Kindle Fire, a Coopers Hawk winery gift basket and a spa basket.

The drawing will be Aug. 10, and the winner need not be present.

McHenry County Jail has about 400 detained immigrants under a U.S. Immigrant and Customs Enforcement contract. Clergy and lay leaders have visited the jail every Tuesday afternoon for ministry services since the Illinois Access to Religious Ministry Act passed in 2008.
