Turning Point's 'Hike in Her Heels' event promotes domestic violence awareness

CRYSTAL LAKE – Turning Point wants people to walk a figurative mile in the shoes of domestic violence victims.

Literally, they’d prefer heels.

The organization is pairing with Star 105.5 to organize Take a Hike in Her Heels, a 1-mile walk to benefit the Woodstock-based nonprofit, which confronts area violence against women and children.

The walk departs and concludes at the parking lot of Sam’s Club, 5670 Route 14, Crystal Lake, at 9 a.m. Aug. 17. Advance registration costs $25 for adults, $15 for children, $10 for additional children and $75 for a family.

Organizers are asking participants of all ages and genders to sport high heels, although training and volunteer coordinator Jennifer Kenning said they’d settle for women’s shoes.

It’s a noncompetitive walk, Kenning said, but that doesn’t mean it’s not difficult.

“It is a challenge,” she said. “Especially toward guys, who we want to take an interest in this issue, in helping make the situation better.”

Turning Point supports victims of domestic violence by providing emergency shelter, case management, emergency food and clothing, counseling, mental health therapy and medical and legal assistance. The organization served more than 1,754 people in 2012.

Take a Hike in Her Heels is a part of the eighth annual Turning Point Radiothon, which the organization will host Aug. 16-17 with Star 105.5. More information about the weekend is available on the Turning Point Facebook page, www.facebook.com/mchenrycountyturningpoint.

“It is just a fun addition to some of our other activities going on with the Radiothon,” Kenning said.
