CHICAGO — Chicago Police say a 5-year-old boy and 7-year-old boy are in critical condition after being shot during separate incidents that took place just hours apart.

The older boy was shot twice in the head around 7:30 p.m. Thursday while he was in a park on the city's southwest side. Meanwhile, the younger boy was shot around 12:40 a.m. on Friday several miles away. Police spokesman Hector Alfaro says the 5-year-old was shot in the abdomen and thigh.

Alfaro says both boys were in parks with other people when men approached them and opened fired. Authorities don't believe the boys were the intended targets and so far no arrests have been made in either case.

Two other people — a 34-year-old and a 28-year-old — were also wounded in Friday's shooting.
