Toys to encourage kids’ imaginations

CRYSTAL LAKE – Marvin’s Toy Store has opened for business at 64A N. Williams St., Crystal Lake.

The store aims to spark children’s imaginations and foster their creativity with open-ended toys that are good for the future of our environment, community and children, according to owner Lori McConville.

All of the store’s products and vendors fit into at least one of the following categories: Fair trade, organic, socially responsible, recycled, parent-crafted, green, natural, and made in the USA.

The toys, puzzles, games and more at Marvin’s Toy Store allow children to think, explore and imagine countless possibilities for a simple toy. “A classic toy grows with a child and the child with the toy,” said owner Lori McConville.

McConville, a former kindergarten teacher in the Crystal Lake school district, identified a need for toys that encouraged kids to use their imaginations and see where it could take them. Combining this idea with her passion for the environment, she decided to open her own toy store with her daughter, Kate McConville. Kate, the store’s buyer, is responsible for sourcing products and researching companies that fit Marvin’s Toy Store’s standards.

“Mr. Rogers said, ‘Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning.  But for children, play is serious learning.’ We agree,” Kate said.

The store opened June 1. A Crystal Lake Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting to celebrate its opening is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. July 26.
