I appreciate the comments that people take the time to submit to my blog and the fact that they are reading my blog to begin with. Every once in a while I throw an opinionated topic out there expecting that I will likely get some unfavorable responses in return – and last week I did. We are fortunate that we live in a country with freedom of speech to express our opinions openly.
I understand that the freedom of personal choice in what we eat is a sensitive topic. As I mentioned in my blog entry last week, there is a certain point where I believe that individual choices can affect society as a whole. When it comes to our children, we have an obligation to help them to make good choices. The politics and money behind junk food in school vending machines shouldn’t come before the health of our kids.
As for the comments pertaining to aspartame, this is also a very controversial topic. Many people are concerned about the potential negative effects of aspartame and other food additives. There is a lot of research out there that supports both sides of the aspartame controversy. Fortunately as individuals, we can choose whether or not we want to consume aspartame-containing foods.
I do get questions about aspartame and other food additives frequently, and I answer those questions in an unbiased manner. However, what I find is that getting most people to focus on eating more healthy and nutritious foods (ie. fruits, vegetables, whole grains, etc.) is a much bigger issue for the majority of the population. As a healthcare professional it is going to be benefit the public much more to focus my efforts on encouraging these basic healthy habits, which we know can help to lower the risk for disease and improve overall quality of life, rather than zeroing in on one specific cause.
