JOLIET — A 68-year prison sentence has been handed a Chicago man convicted in the 2007 shooting death of a Romeoville teenager.
Ricardo Gutierrez was sentenced Wednesday by Will County Circuit Judge Carla Alessio Policandriotes. The 24-year-old must serve the entire sentence.
Gutierrez was accused of shooting 18-year-old Javier Barrios in October 2007 as he sat in his car behind a Plainfield gas station.
During the March trial, defense attorneys said Gutierrez was trying to help his girlfriend, Gabriela Escutia of Joliet, stand up to Barrios. They claimed Barrios abused Escutia and threatened to hurt her baby.
Prosecutors say Escutia shot Barrios once in the chest while he sat in his vehicle and Gutierrez shot him twice. Escutia has been charged with murder. No trial date has been set.
