McHenry chamber’s Fiesta Days in full swing

Published: Tuesday, July 16, 2013 5:30 a.m. CDT

This week is my favorite part of Fiesta Days. Much of the activity is centered around Veterans Memorial Park in McHenry.

Tonight and tomorrow are two McHenry Parks and Recreation activities. Tonight is the McHenry River Run with a 5:45 p.m. check-in at Veterans Memorial Park. Tomorrow is the Open Track Meet from 5 to 8 p.m. at McCracken Field for children 6 to 14.

On Thursday, Fiesta Days presents the Concert in the Park at Veterans Memorial Park from 5 to 9:30 p.m.  Enjoy listening to the McHenry Stage Band with Maureen Christine. A special recognition ceremony for 2013 Parade Marshal Pete Merkel takes place at 7 p.m.

On Friday, McHenry’s retail districts host inside sidewalk sales. The pick of the house is yours before the sales go outside on Saturday.

Friday also brings us the Kids Ice Cream Social  from 3 to 8 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park. Featured will be 4 Strings Attached of the Martin Lopez Academy, Mar Ray Dance Studio, Exotic Animal Show, Josh Sukow of Funbelievable Balloons and the Crystal Lake Strikers marching percussion unit.

Other events include an obstacle course, face painting by Coldwell Banker Honig-Bell, McHenry Township Fire Protection District Fire Safety House, and finger printing by McHenry Police Department, inflatables and more. Cost: $5 hand stamps for all inflatables and games, duck pond, face painting, balloons, Bozo buckets, ring toss, fire safety house and free ice cream.

Saturday features outside sidewalk sales with Arts and Crafts in the Park from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.. On hand will be some of the Midwest’s finest crafters. Riverview Theatre Company will provide their acclaimed Shakespeare Festival, a day-long program of Elizabethan fun and excitement.

Climaxing Fiesta Days is the parade at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.  Appearing will be the German Wheeler, Tebala, Stilt Walker, Those Funny Little People, Jesse White Tumblers, Drum and Bugle Corps, Firehouse 8, The Strikers and McHenry High School Band.

Immediately following the parade in Veterans Memorial Park will be the Drum and Bugle Corps show with Green Beret from Janesville, and Group Therapy from McHenry. Special guests are the Viscounts.
