Hultgren wastes time

To the Editor:

Illinois Congressman Randy Hultgren (14th District) was elected as a small-government advocate, so why is he wasting taxpayers’ time and money on a proposal that he knows will fail, and which, if it did pass, would make government more intrusive?

Randy is co-sponsoring a bill, introduced by Kansas Republican Rep. Tim Heulskamp, to amend the U. S. Constitution to officially define marriage as between one man and one woman through what they are calling the “marriage protection amendment.”

Reps. Heulskamp, Hultgren and the 26 other Republican co-sponsors know that this bill has no chance of passing.

An amendment to the Constitution requires approval of two-thirds of the members of the House and Senate and ratification by 38 states.

This has been tried before and failed. It will fail again, and they know it.

So, no matter how you feel about same sex-marriage and the Supreme Court decision striking down Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act, introducing thisamendment is a waste of time and taxpayer money.

The real purpose of the bill is not to amend the constitution, but to show they stand for family values. It is nothing but grandstanding at our expense.
