URBANA (AP) — A group affiliated with the University of Illinois is leading the push for a federal grant that advocates say could help make the state a key player in digital manufacturing.
The (Champaign) News-Gazette (http://bit.ly/13cmKus) reports that UI Labs is expected to submit a proposal for the grant. UI Labs is a nonprofit research group backed by the university, the state and the city of Chicago.
It's part of a 2012 White House initiative to spend $1 billion to foster innovation in manufacturing at up to 15 institutes nationwide. Youngstown, Ohio, was picked as the first location. The objective is to make supply chains more efficient.
The News-Gazette says the government will award $70 million. Those submitting proposals must commit to matching that figure with investment from private industry.
