Chicago boy hailed for warning neighbors of fire
CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago firefighters are praising a 12-year-old boy who pounded on doors and alerted dozens of people to get out of homes in his neighborhood as a blaze broke out.
Fire Commissioner Jose Santiago said that what Edwin Perez did on Saturday in Chicago's Canaryville neighborhood was "unbelievable."
Perez will be a seventh-grader in the fall. And he told reporters he was scared but knew what to do because of fire safety tips he learned in Alexander Graham Bell elementary school.
He said he ran from house to house screaming, "'Wake up ... There's a fire here.'"
Fire department spokesman Larry Langford said the blaze started on a back porch of one home and quickly threatened three other homes.
Langford says the cause of the fire is being investigated.
