Chicago police pay big overtime to fight crime

CHICAGO – A published report said the Chicago Police Department paid more than $20 million in overtime pay in April and May. The move will put 2013 overtime spending $10.5 in the red.

A local newspaper reported the department spent $42.5 million on overtime through May. The newspaper obtained the figures through an information request.

The jump in spending comes before summer, when crime rates typically rise.

Some of the April and May overtime went to a program that puts hundreds of officers in the city’s most violent areas.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel has said he’ll do whatever is necessary to cover the spending surge. City leaders point to a drop in violent crime this year.

But the police union said the overtime spending a short-term solution to a major manpower problem.
