CRYSTAL LAKE – Centegra Hospital-McHenry has been recognized by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois as one of the first hospitals in the nation to receive a Blue Distinction Center+ designation in the area of cardiac care.

Blue Distinction Centers are hospitals shown to deliver quality specialty care based on objective, transparent measures for patient safety and health outcomes that were developed with input from the medical community. This year, the national program added a new designation level, Blue Distinction Centers+, to recognize hospitals that deliver both quality and cost-efficient specialty care.

“Centegra Hospital-McHenry’s cardiac team is proud to be recognized by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois for meeting the rigorous cardiac care selection criteria for the Blue Distinction+ program,” said Dr. Douglas Tomasian, director of cardiology with Centegra Health System. “This distinction reflects our commitment to providing state-of-the-art cardiac care in a cost-efficient way.”

To receive a Blue Distinction Center+ for Cardiac Care designation, a hospital must demonstrate success in meeting both general quality and safety criteria such as preventing hospital-acquired infections and cardiac-specific quality measures, which are related to lower rates of complications and death following cardiac surgery and non-surgical procedures

These hospitals must also show better cost efficiency relative to their peers. According to Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois, only those facilities that first meet Blue Distinction’s nationally established, objective quality measures are considered for designation as a Blue Distinction Center+.

“Centegra has spent years developing a leading cardiac program to provide our community members exceptional care close to their homes,” said Rachel Sebastian, vice president and site administrator at Centegra Hospital-McHenry.

“It starts with outstanding emergency medical services care and specially trained emergency department staff members who immediately respond when people have heart attacks,” she said. “Our cath lab provides rapid response to reopen blocked arteries and to restore blood flow to the heart. Our cardiac surgery team is recognized for its outstanding level of care. We are proud this designation highlights the care our teams provide.”
