Sheriff's Office nets Triple Crown Award

WOODSTOCK – The McHenry County Sheriff's Office recently marked a trifecta of law enforcement accreditation and was awarded the Triple Crown Award from the National Sheriff's Association.

This rare award is given to those agencies that are accredited simultaneously by three major agencies: Commission on the Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies or CALEA; the Commission on Accreditation for Corrections or CAC of the American Correctional Association; and the National Commission on Correctional Healthcare (NCCHA).

To become accredited, the Sheriff's Office was inspected on "hundreds" of criteria department-wide and each one can take years, Undersheriff Andy Zinke said.

The designation puts the Sheriff's Office in a category with only 35 other sheriff's offices out of 3,080 nationwide, and the third office in Illinois. Cook and DuPage counties also are Triple Crown recipients.

"This assures [the community] that the Sheriff's Office is one of the best the United States," Zinke said. "It's like sending your kid to college, we're in the ivy league."

The sheriff's office formally received the recognition June 24 at the National Sheriff's Association Conference in Charlotte, N.C.

The Sheriff's Office is aiming for a fourth accreditation for its emergency dispatch center.
