Support diaper bank

Published: Saturday, July 20, 2013 5:30 a.m. CDT

To the Editor:

First, I want to commend the McHenry County Community Foundation and the amazing people who support it for their incredible effort in funding 65 organizations in McHenry County.

As one who has worked in this county for over 30 years and seen many changes, the work of the foundation changes only for the better, and I am grateful.

There are small organizations in our county, however, that have not yet received those wonderful funds. The St. Paul Diaper Bank Partnership is one of them.

I am new to this small organization and the work it does. The diaper bank tackles a problem no one wants to talk about: the need for diapers for the most vulnerable among us – infants, children, disabled kids and adults, those suffering through illness, and seniors in need.

There is little help for those who cannot afford diapers. I am asking for awareness of this very real and sad dilemma. Children suffer when they don’t have clean diapers. Adults are homebound (and often placed in nursing homes) if they cannot afford them. Those who are disabled or sick are at serious health risk.

This is a problem that needs to be talked about and supported. Until the St. Paul Diaper Bank is large enough and strong enough to be able to qualify for foundation funding, we need your help. This is important.

Help us if you can.

The Rev. Phyllis Mueller

Director, St. Paul Diaper Bank
