CRYSTAL LAKE – A future outdoor aquatic facility or community recreation center in Crystal Lake is closer to reality after the park district announced a pending purchase of 27 acres.
For the first time in more than three years, park district commissioners announced a land purchase that would give the district control of 27 acres at 8917 Ackman Road, which features a driving range, a remote-control car racetrack and a mini-golf course. The $625,000 purchase will not require any additional tax dollars from residents.
Jason Herbster, executive director for Crystal Lake Park District, said the sale would not be finalized until a roughly six-month due diligence period to determine the soil quality and whether utility requirements can be met for development. Once finalized, Herbster said, the existing uses would cease.
Board commissioners will discuss whether they should pursue a community recreation center or outdoor aquatic facility for the area – the top two options residents identified in a 2010 community interest survey.
Herbster said those projects are still “a long ways off,” and funding sources would need to be identified.
“This is just the first step to get all of that going,” he said. “We’re trying to meet the community needs slowly but surely.”
