American values

To the Editor:

What happened to the early American values? Part 1 of 6.

If you don’t have time to give this letter careful thought and consideration, please put if aside until you do.

I am a devout Christian. I believe that God has blessed and guided America to the greatest nation the world has ever known. Anyone not a Christian, but who is intelligent and open-minded, will agree that America’s success has come from what is different about America and other great nations, which is following and living their lives within Christian principles.

America is governed by the rule of law spelled out in the Constitution. America’s financial system, capitalism, has made America the wealthiest country in the world. It would be well to remember the Bible teaches us to “treat your follow man like you would want to be treated yourself.” George Washington said without the Bible, a democratic government would not be possible.

Many of our notable leaders have said all of America’s successes are directly attributable to the people. This is true, and it is only true because of our early American values. There are two historic facts that illustrate the most important of these. The Pilgrims had to lease a ship to come to America to obtain religious freedom. Despite losing almost half of their members in the first winter due to exposure and illness, the debt was paid in full with interest.
