Benefit held for Wonder Lake Family displaced after fire

WONDER LAKE – A benefit is planned for a mother and her two sons who lost most of their belongings in a fire Sunday morning.

Neither Krystle Lively nor her two sons, one is 3 and the other 7, were home when the Wonder Lake Fire Protection District responded to a fire, which started in the garage of 7611 Orchard Road in Wonder Lake.

The family had lived in the one-room apartment above the garage for about a month, Lively said.

"There's really nothing," Lively said. "Between the smoke damage and the water damage and the fire, it's just unusable. I have pictures. I have some clothes."

The fire caused an estimated $40,000 in damage to the garage and about a quarter of the house, Wonder Lake Fire Protection District Lt. Ron Herman said.

No one was injured, and Lively's two cats were rescued.

The younger of the cats, which is 2 months old, needed to stay two nights at a veterinarian's office. The Red Cross provided money to cover the bill.

The benefit is planned for 2 to 7 p.m. Saturday, July 27, at Mackey's Hideout, 2601 S. River Road in McHenry.

Amy Franklin, a friend of Lively's since fourth grade, is organizing the event. She hopes to raise at least enough money to cover Lively's first and last month's rent at a new place.

"When I heard about this, I was devastated," Franklin said. "She doesn't have a whole lot. Her life hasn't been peaches and cream. She had gotten her life together and then her house burns down."

Franklin hopes the event will help keep Lively positive.

Hot dogs and water will be served in exchange for a donation. A 50-50 raffle is planned.

Franklin is looking for donated items to be raffled off. She can be contacted at 224-577-5587
