CRYSTAL LAKE – Summer day trips offered by McHenry County College’s Trips and Tours program will help area residents discover the benefits of a sustainable lifestyle by visiting a local farmers market and an interactive planter art installation in Chicago.
• Market to Meal: The Woodstock Farmers Market was voted No. 1 in Illinois in 2012 and placed fifth in America for medium-sized markets. This tour features a hands-on approach to using locally grown produce as MCC culinary instructor Tina Drzal guides participants through the Woodstock Farmers Market. Farmer Keith Johnson will be on hand to answer questions about the benefits of buying local produce. Afterward, participants will join Chef Tina in the MCC’s culinary lab to prepare a healthy meal. This tour takes place from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Aug. 10. Participants will meet in the MCC Commons. The cost is $45. Registration is limited to 18 students. Use course ID: NST S80 010 when registering.
• Plant Green Ideas: This trip to downtown Chicago will showcase the planter art installation on Chicago’s Cultural Mile. Diane Wlezien, an interior landscape designer and artist, will guide participants through this interactive installation and discuss the supporting environmental ideas for each head-shaped planter, as well as why Chicago is a global leader in the “green” movement. Wlezien will be joined by Niki Ketchum, a sustainability graduate from the University of Nevada. The afternoon will include a walk through Millennium Park. Lunch is on the student's own. The tour runs from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 14 and will meet in the MCC commons area in Building B. The cost is $59. Use course ID: NST S14 014 when registering.
