Veteran housing, new home for church on McHenry agenda
McHENRY – A McHenry nonprofit expects the 24 units at a proposed affordable housing complex to fill quickly, its executive director said.
TLS Veterans plans on tearing down two homes at the southeast corner of Ridge Road and Route 120 and building three eight-unit, two-story buildings that would provide permanent affordable housing for veterans.
“The need is so great that within three months, we will fill the 24 units up and we’ll be looking for more,” said Alan Belcher, the nonprofit’s executive director. “That’s not me saying that; we had a market analysis.”
In 2012, the last time the McHenry County Continuum of Care to End Homelessness conducted a point-in-time count to get an idea of the homeless population in the county, its volunteers counted 57 homeless veterans, which make up nearly half the county’s homeless population.
Those veterans don’t include the 30 to 45 veterans that TLS Veterans houses each year at its transitional housing center, New Horizons, in Hebron.
TLS Veterans also has an office at 5330 W. Elm St. in McHenry.
The McHenry Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a public hearing on the project at its meeting Thursday evening.
Hearings also will take place on a conditional-use permit that would allow outdoor seating at 3343 Shoppers Drive where Buffalo Wild Wings hopes to open before the Super Bowl and a conditional-use permit to allow assemblies at 414 S. Crystal Lake Road where The Chapel hopes to relocate, Deputy City Administrator Doug Martin said.
The property, which is zoned agricultural, also would need to be annexed into the city, Martin said. The McHenry City Council would vote on the annexation and the commission’s recommendation at the same meeting.
The Chapel currently rents space at McHenry West High School, 4724 W. Crystal Lake Road.
